Chapter Eleven

A heavy shroud had descended on the Aurelia mansion, as if the velvety night sky itself became detached from the heavens and sank down like a curtain around the house. Through the near-dead silence, the rhythmic rush and pull of the ocean’s tides acted like a balm on my nerves. I could see it clearly in my mind, the dark blue waves encroaching up to the sandy shore, then creeping back to sea to rebuild and storm the beach again. Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, like the very heartbeat of the Earth itself. I tried to focus in on it, to find something natural and understandable, something constant in the swirling chaos that had descended upon us all in the past couple of days. Just when I started to think the maelstrom was winding down, the winds of life kicked up again. When it all resettled, everything was different. Everything was changing. Everything was transforming, including my five beloved dragons.

And me.

The gas-lit flames glowed in the fireplace in front of me. I sat facing it while Danic, Ryen, Kellum, and Hale sat in a semicircle arching around the fire, flanking me on either side. There was no sound in the house except the ocean’s sighs.

After my tumultuous dream, I’d awakened to find Hale holding me close to his bare chest, stroking my hair and whispering soothing words. Once my hitching breaths had quieted, we’d both dressed quickly and hurried out to the living room, where the rest of the guys had been standing around waiting for us.

Except Ash.

“So…we all felt it, right?” Danic asked softly, looking around the semi-circle for confirmation.

“I have no idea what it is, but yeah, we all felt it,” Ryen replied.

“Obviously not everyone,” Hale said, a deep crease dug into his brow. “Lazlo and Ash aren’t here.”

“That’s because neither of them were part of it,” Kellum answered.

The fire cast his strong features in sharp relief. His brow furrowed and a little muscle in his jaw twitched with the frustration and confusion that we all felt. The calm one, the man who anchored us all, was worried. That was more than enough to set my nerves on edge.

“What did it feel like for you guys?” I asked, not sure I was ready for the answer.

Ryen leaned forward, his expression as serious as I’d ever seen it. “I can’t speak for the rest of them, but it felt as if I was in a regular ol’ dream. I was taking my old van from the ‘60s — remember that?” The others nodded. “I was taking it to a car wash, then…I wasn’t. It felt like I was ripped out of my dream and dropped into yours, Favor. It was pretty disorienting, as if dreams aren’t already disorienting enough.”

“That’s weird,” I mused.

“It was like when you’re listening to a pop station in the car,” Hale added, “but then you crest a hill or move just out of range and it switches to a totally different station playing country or classical. Totally jarring.
